"Brothers and Keepers”
The only thing that stood out to me the most was the difference in Robby and David. David, i felt was on a much higher level then Robby was. David acted in much more of a mature and respectable manner. Where as Robby acted immature, used more slang terms than proper english and wasnt well educated. The story “Brothers and Keepers,” to me was hard to keep up with. There was many stories going on at once and i wasnt sure where one started and where one ended.
Live from Death Row
Live from Death Row was about an inmate at the State prison in Pennsylvania. He goes on the explain some of the hardships that they go through while in prison. They have to spend 22 hours in the cell and then get only 2 hours for activities. They get visits but with restrictions. Such as they have to be 80 sq. feet away, handcuffed and seperated by glass/steel trim and wire mesh. On top of that they have to be strip-searched before the vivist. Which brings me to the quote i found most graphic.
”What visitors do not see, prior to the visit, is a horrifying
spectacle – the body-cavity strip search. Once a prisoner is naked,
the visiting-room guard spits out a familiar cadence: ‘Oper yer mouth.
Stick out your tongue. You wear any dentures? Lemme see both sides of
you hands. Pull your foreskin back.Lift your sac. Turn around. Bend
over. Spread your cheeks. Bottom of yer feet. Get dressed.”
Even though i feel that they deserve everything they get, this is morally wrong. The things that are described above are extremely degrading. The way Mumia Abu- Jamal words this paragraph you can picture the whole thing in your head like its happening right infront of you. I couldnt imagine having to go through something as horrifying as this.
Darfur
During my senior year in High School we went to Washington DC for our senior trip. One of the days while we were walking around by the capital there was this huge rally going on. My friends and i walked over to it and there was this huge sign that read “Save Darfur.” We were extremly interested so we staed and listened in. The whole rally was about how the genocide needed to be stopped in Darfur. When we arrived back at school we decided to have a bake sale in order to raise money to send to the people living in Darfur. We raised over 700 dollars. When i found this link i thought it was interesting to see how many people truely are focusing on the problem over in Darfur.
Assignment #2
The website i have chosen for the “News Source” is CNN. I feel that this website is always up to date and it has the most current events. It has news about anything from a sports paragraph to a political stand.
For the blogging part of this assignment I have chosen BoinBoing. It is a bloggin site about all different cultural and interesting technologies. It has won a Lifetime Achievement and Best Group Blog award in 2006.
The Liars Club
The quote that starts off the excerpt from the “Liars Club” relates to all of us in a way. We all have our own little secrets and our own ways of confessing them. I remember when i was younger i was the only child in my family. My first lie when i was younger my parents found quite amusing. Never was it me who did something wrong it was always someone else, yet there was noone else. So when i did something wrong and came up with the answer “it wasnt me”, my parents laughed. In lieing to others and ourselves it gets us nowhere. We find that it gets us into deeper trouble and it leaves us by ourselves. Alone in the sense that its now just you and your lie, noone will agree to a lie.
When the quote says “…and know that within the territory of ourselves, there can only be our footprints.” Meaning that you know after lieing your left with your mistakes. Mistakes that are left behind in a trail through your past.
